Fluorescent signaling in parrots.

چکیده
Fluorescent pigments appear to glow because ultraviolet (UV) light is absorbed and reemitted at longer wavelengths. Humans use fluorescence as a highlighter, but it remains a mystery whether naturally occurring fluorescence functions as a signal or is a by-product of pigment structure. Here, we test for evidence of signaling using the fluorescent plumage of parrots (1). We performed mate choice experiments on wild-type budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus), in which both sexes have fluorescent yellow plumage on their crown and cheeks (Fig. 1, A and B) that is used in courtship displays. “Focal” individuals of each sex were given a choice between two “stimulus” birds of the opposite sex, one retaining fluorescent plumage on its crown (F treatment) and the other with

IN THEIR BREVIA “FLUORESCENT SIGNALING in parrots” (4 Jan., p. 92), K. E. Arnold and coauthors use mate choice experiments to demonstrate that fluorescence in wild-type budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulateus) is probably functional and not incidental. However, there is further evidence to support this hypothesis in the feathers themselves. The green chest feathers of wild-type budgerigars actual...
متن کاملUltraviolet signals in birds are special.
Recent behavioural experiments have shown that birds use ultraviolet (UV)-reflective and fluorescent plumage as cues in mate choice. It remains controversial, however, whether such UV signals play a special role in sexual communication, or whether they are part of general plumage coloration. We use a comparative approach to test for a general association between sexual signalling and either UV-...
متن کاملA New Reporter Gene Technology: Opportunities and Perspectives
The paper summarizes the current status of the reporter gene technology and their basics. Reporter gene technology is widely used to monitor cellular events associated with gene expression and signal transduction. Based upon the splicing of transcriptional control elements to a variety of reporter genes, it “reports” the effects of a cascade of signaling events on gene expression inside cells. ...
متن کاملAn association between feather damaging behavior and corticosterone metabolite excretion in captive African grey parrots (Psittacus erithacus)
BACKGROUND African grey parrots (Psittacus erithacus) are kept as pets and are frequently hand-reared. It has been observed that hand-reared African grey parrots may develop behavioral disorders such as feather damaging behavior (FDB). It is well known that chronic stress is involved in behavioral disorders in captive parrots. The main glucocorticoid in birds is corticosterone; its quantificati...
متن کاملThe skull development of parrots with special reference to the emergence of a morphologically unique cranio-facial hinge.
The order Psittaciformes (parrots) has unique morphological features in the head that are evolutionarily novel. To better understand the unique evolution of the head in parrots, the developmental pattern of the skull of the budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus) was initially described on the basis of transparent skeletal specimens. Although the fundamental pattern of the skull development of bir...
